Respected throughout the world for its architecture – from classical to contemporary – London is not only home to a wealth of globally-renowned buildings, but it’s also spoilt for choice when it comes to famous districts with exceptional examples of period architecture. At Ventrolla, we’re lucky enough to have carried out work restoring and replacing London sash windows for amazing homes on some of the most iconic streets. Here are a few of our favourites:
Fitzroy Road, Primrose Hill, NW1
Nestling in the Primrose Hill Conservation Area – in a district with a history of art studios and piano makers – this elegant road is home to three-storey Victorian terraced properties. These flat fronted properties – with stucco and brick facades, surrounded by railings at the front – have pairs of stunning Georgian sash windows on each floor. Those on the ground and first floor feature projecting window sills and moulded window surrounds – detail which we think gives them a wonderfully grand look and feel.
Chalcot Crescent & Chalcot Square, NW1
Chalcot Square is an important part of the Primrose Hill Conservation Area, surrounded by breath-taking 19th listed buildings. All of the terraced houses facing the grassy square are of particular interest, as their stucco facades are painted in a range of colours – including gorgeous soft pastel shades – imagine how beautiful they look on a sunny day! Chalcot Crescent is equally charming – with projecting porches, cast iron balconies, sash windows and railings with fleur-de-lys finials. You might even recognise it as the location of the Paddington films.
Falkland Road, Kentish Town NW5
Another striking and colourful street, Falkland Road, is part of the Kentish Town Conservation Area. From the stucco facades to the cornice mouldings, these vibrant mid 19th century properties are full of character – not least thanks to their striking sash windows. It was resident, Judith Peak, who started the craze for colour when she painted her home in a vivid turquoise shade. Her neighbours soon followed suit, creating a rainbow road that draws admirers from miles around – it’s an Instagrammer’s dream!
