Stephen Brewer called on Ventrolla to repair and restore six windows of Spar Cottage, a pretty two‐bedroom coastal holiday cottage he owns in the beautiful village of Blakeney in Norfolk.
The existing timber sash windows were in a poor condition and Stephen first thought they would need to be replaced. The need for listed building consent could make this difficult and so he began to explore the option of renovation.
Stephen said: “I did get a quote for replacing the windows, but it was very expensive. I also knew I’d need to obtain building consent and so I was intrigued when I saw an article featuring Ventrolla in a national newspaper, talking about sash window restoration. They came to assess the work that would be required, and I was impressed with their detailed knowledge – and I was delighted that it all came in at a reasonable price too.”
“The windows on the cottage needed a fair amount of renovation. Ventrolla replaced the rotten sills, fitted new weights, pulleys, sash cords and brass hardware. The windows were draught‐proofed and best of all, years and years of excess paint were removed and now the sash windows can run freely.”
Traditionally, sash windows require a 3mm gap around the sash for functionality but inevitably this gap allows in draughts, dust and noise, causes annoying rattles and leads to loss of heat. Alongside the renovations, Ventrolla installed their unique draught-proofing system in Spar Cottage’s windows to cure the various problems without limiting the window’s movement in any way.
Stephen added: “The results are fantastic. The windows are now fully operational, and the draught‐proofing has improved the energy performance of the property. As the cottage is let for short holiday rentals, the quality brass pull handles and locks ensure the windows both look stylish and are easy for guests to open and close.”
Spar Cottage is a traditional brick and flint Grade 2 Listed Building located in the heart of Blakeney on the North Norfolk Coast. This cottage is the perfect base to get away from it all for a well‐deserved break ‐ with easy access to the local village and pretty quayside.
