Sash windows at prestigious universities: Ventrolla’s projects

The Samuel Alexander Building: A Manchester Landmark Reborn

The facade of a substantial brick structure, highlighted by elegant white timber sash windows, exemplifying traditional architecture.

Ventrolla restored over 300 sash windows at the Samuel Alexander Building, part of the University of Manchester’s Language Centre. Located on Oxford Road, this Grade II listed neoclassical building, designed by architect Percy Scott Worthington, was inaugurated in 1919 and named after philosopher Samuel Alexander, who taught at the university from 1893 to 1925. Originally serving as the Faculty of Arts, it now houses the School of Arts, Languages, and Cultures.

As part of a £14 million refurbishment, Ventrolla restored the building’s historic windows for £220,000. They used their patented Sash Removal System (SRS) and Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS) for the restoration. These systems preserved the windows’ historical authenticity while reducing draughts and noise. The project involved intricate work on single-glazed sash and Venetian windows. Ventrolla maintained the building’s heritage while enhancing comfort and energy efficiency.

David McGinnis of Graham Construction, the contractor for the project, praised Ventrolla’s professionalism and flexibility, noting their ability to work within ‘tight schedules and challenging site conditions‘. The result was a seamless blend of historical preservation and modern performance, ensuring the building remains a functional and beautiful part of the university’s campus.

The Sir Frederick Mappin Building: Breathing New Life into Sheffield’s Historic Heart

Sir Fredrick Mappin Building

At the University of Sheffield, Ventrolla restored 32 sash windows in the Grade II listed Sir Frederick Mappin Building. The building is named after Frederick Mappin, a factory owner and politician key to the university’s formation. It is a cornerstone of Sheffield’s educational heritage and was once a redundant laboratory. Ventrolla’s expert restoration helped transform the space into state-of-the-art meeting rooms.

Ventrolla’s work involved not only repairing the windows but also installing the VPSS to eliminate draughts and improve energy efficiency. Bryan Evans from the University of Sheffield Estates highlighted the positive impact of the renovation, noting that the ‘windows’ authenticity was preserved, with only 20% needing replacement‘. The successful restoration has significantly enhanced the building’s appearance and functionality, ensuring it continues to serve the university’s needs for years to come.

Staffordshire University’s Cadman Centre: A Landmark Restored

Staffordshire University

Ventrolla’s expertise was also called upon at Staffordshire University, where they restored 140 sliding sash windows at the historic Cadman Centre. This central Stoke landmark, housing the university’s library and administrative offices, required careful restoration to maintain its heritage status while improving its usability.

The project posed several challenges, including working in an occupied building. However, through a rolling programme that minimised disruption, Ventrolla was able to complete the restoration efficiently. The renovation not only restored the windows to full functionality but also significantly reduced noise and draughts. The project was a huge success, much to the satisfaction of both staff and students.
