Once the Christmas festivities are over, and the New Year looms, thoughts often turn to plans for the year ahead. If you’re thinking of giving rooms in your period home a makeover, you may believe that heritage colours and sympathetic design features are the only options. But taking a look at the latest design trends can give you inspiration, so your home embraces period style with a modern twist.
We’ve scoured some of the design industry’s predictions, to bring you our top five interior trends for 2022 which could inspire the décor in your Victorian, Edwardian or Georgian period home.
While muted tones of cream, beige and grey never really go out of fashion, classic neutral palettes look set to dominate for the year ahead. Think warm grey tones – known as ‘greige’ – rich browns and earthy shades, like natural greens and blues. And colours inspired by nature, which can give your room a warm and welcoming feel. Your choice of materials is key here, too. Go for wood, marble, travertine, stone – perfect with natural-colour wall and floor coverings, as @chorltonhouse have here:

Shades of pink take centre stage in 2022 – from relaxing dusky pastels and vibrant sugar pinks to deep, warm jewel tones (a particular favourite in Victorian homes). There are no rules about which pink to pick, but you may find that pinks work with more colours that you’d think. Team with green for a soothing bathroom or bedroom, or contrast with greys for a cool, contemporary look that slots into a period kitchen or hall way, seamlessly.

Styling your home is not just about your wall or fabric choices. It’s your whole ethos to interior design, that’s key for the year ahead. Pick energy-saving lighting and heating. Choose heavy fabrics and cosy rugs to makes your space warmer without having to turn the heating up. Source reclaimed, recycled and sustainable pieces rather than buying new. This also dovetails perfectly with the trend for vintage, which is so perfect for period properties. This is your opportunity to focus a room around a unique piece of furniture – handed down, found at a car boot or sourced online – and don’t be afraid to mix and match eras for a really distinctive look.
The good news is that comfort is in. Rich, textured fabrics like velvet, brocade, wool and chenille are all big news for 2022. And these are all fabrics which are authentic in Victorian era properties, too. Make an impact with luxuriously rich shades contrasting against neutral walls – adding a pop of colour can really change the feel of space. This is a trend that works in all rooms – from boucle throws on beds to upholstered ottomans, from velvet curtains to tweed cushions. Take a look at this inspiring shot from @comedowntothewoods:

Bringing the outside in is a trend that shows no signs of going away. And this is one that works brilliantly in period properties. Houseplants continue to be the accessory of choice – reflecting the Victorian obsession for greenery in the home. If you’re a novice try relatively easy to care for plants, like statement Kentia palms, frilly Boston ferns, statuesque Monsteras and trailing Philodenrons, for an authentic heritage look, that’s also bang on-trend. But it’s not just the plant you choose, it’s what you stand it in. Ornate plant stands, pots, screens and trellises – in wicker, cast iron, pottery and wood.
